教宗方濟各剛被《時代》雜誌選為2013年年度人物。 [1]
教宗為什麼會當選呢？《時代》總編輯Nancy Gibbs解釋說，教宗方濟各“使教宗步出宮庭，走進大街小巷；使天主教面對自己生命最深底處的需求；並在審判和憐憫之間取得平衡。” [2]
教宗方濟各又被稱為“人民的教宗”。自今年三月上任以來，他的謙卑和寬容，並他的親民和踏實作風，廣為人民所愛戴。《時代》雜誌在年度人物的主題文章中指出，“教宗方濟各之所以如此重要，是因為他可以在如此短的時間內吸引千百萬人的關注，而這些人在此之前對天主教已不抱有任何期待。” [3]
