1969年8月13日，34歲的幾內亞 (Guinea) 神父羅伯特·薩拉 (Robert Sarah) 成為全球最年輕的都總主教(Metropolitan Archbishop)。自從2010年10月位列樞機團 (College of Cardinals) 以來，他不僅被認為是非洲天主教會的主要代表之一，並且一直被看為是未來教宗的熱門人選 (papabile)。而在2010年10月被教宗方濟各任命為宗座禮儀及聖事部部長後，他更是備受媒體關注的當代最有影響力的天主教領袖之一。
但媒體喜歡從薩拉樞機的談話中篩選出可以製造新聞的言論，在他們眼中，他代表天主教傳統派。尤其在今年5月以來，他在不同場合提出並呼籲，在舉行彌撒聖祭時，獻祭者應當在適當之處恢復舊日面向東方 (ad orientem) 的傳統，而不是如今日面向信眾 (ad populum) 的正規做法。他認為，在向天主獻上禱告時，應當以天主為中心，而這種姿勢——面向旭日東昇之處——會幫助信徒重拾在上主前的謙卑與敬畏之心。身為負責天主教禮儀的掌門人，他的這番言論立即在教會內掀起了軒然大波，更有人將其看作“倒行逆施”、口誅筆伐。
事實上，兩種禮儀均有其寶貴的神學意義。在今天的天主教會所通行的新禮儀中，獻祭者是面向信眾的，這可以讓人聚焦於祭臺上施行的、紀念主晚餐的感恩祭 (Eucharist) 禮儀，象徵教會群體的合一，同時也幫助相聚一處擘餅的信徒記念天主臨在於教會團體當中。而古老的面向東方模式則蘊含著豐富的末世論和救恩論的意義。誠如榮休教宗本篤十六世（Pope Emeritus Benedict XIV）最近在梵蒂岡的《羅馬觀察家》上所說：在禮儀中面向東方代表了整個造物界協同基督邁向救恩的進程。而那被釘死的基督是復活的主，更是照亮世界的“旭日” (L’Osservatore Romano, 2016年10月13日)。也就是說，在禮儀中面向東方所象徵的不止是整個教會、更是整個造物界在基督的率領下邁向終極的救恩，回歸生命的泉源、造物主的懷抱。
媒體總喜歡以“傳統”或“革新”來簡單標籤並評價某人或某個團體的動向，但教會所關注的，卻是其中更為深入的神學和價值觀。因此，對廣大信徒來說，更重要的或許是能夠進入不同禮儀姿勢背後的思想與理念。也許近日剛推出的一本新書——《靜謐的力量》 (La force du silence) 更能讓我們看到，薩拉樞機並非是個簡單的懷舊主義或復古主義者。靜謐是天主教傳統禮儀中重要的組成部分，更是傳統祈禱的核心部分。這裡列出的是針對此書的部分談話與回饋，從其聊聊數語中不難體會到薩拉樞機對禮儀的執著和深沉關注。他所擔憂的正是今日世界中的喧囂——不僅是言語所製造的喧囂，更是碎片化世界強加給人類之碎片化生存的喧囂。今天的世界似乎總是處於無盡的忙碌中，已然無法忍受真正靜止的閒適。似乎只有在much ado 中才能苟延存活下去，而薩拉樞機所擔憂的恰恰是這種much ado about nothing。不僅如此，在他看來，這種喧囂已成為這個世界所仰賴的毒品，令人錯以為生命存在於外化的言談行止、膚淺的家長裡短中，從而忘記了內在的真正生命，拋棄了聆聽、體會與理解。或許，在薩拉樞機的心目中，圍繞著他而興起的媒體波瀾正屬於這種喧囂。

【 靜謐的力量：對抗喧囂的獨裁 (The Strength of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise) 】
只有擁抱靜謐，教會才能與我們這個時代的世俗搏鬥。(The Church can only combat the worldliness of our age by embracing silence.)
羅馬聖多瑪斯宗座大學哲學院院長 Serge Bonino 神父說，“上主在這世界的首要性所對應的正是靜謐在人靈魂中的絕對首要性。” 保持靜謐就是向上主開放，而消除靜謐就是“將上主從社會中消除。” (Fr. Serge Bonino, Dean of Philosophy at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas in Rome, remarked: “The primacy of God in the world corresponds to the absolute primacy of silence in the soul of man.” To be silent is to be open to God and to cancel silence is “to cancel God from society.”)
